 Overview

Fordham Law provides a range of opportunities for students to spend a semester or a year abroad.  Most students study abroad during the fall semester of their final year of law school.  Study abroad in a student’s final semester is strongly discouraged (other than as part of a double degree program).

 Double-Degree Programs

Fordham offers three double-degree programs that permit select students to spend their third year at the host institution. Upon successful completion of the study abroad year, students will receive the J.D. from Fordham Law and a master-level degree from the host instution.

 Semester Study Abroad Opportunities

For the student with an international focus, Fordham Law School offers global study opportunities.  Fordham students who have completed one year of J.D. study may earn credit toward the J.D. degree through study in an approved program at a foreign law school.  Students may choose to study abroad for a semester or for a summer through one of Fordham's established programs.

 Independent Study Abroad

Students who wish to study abroad for a semester in a program not supported by a Fordham Law School exchange arrangement should submit a 5-page proposed study abroad plan. The proposal should contain the following elements:

  • a statement of the reasons for the proposed study abroad;
  • a statement of why the proposed study cannot be satisfied though one of the Law School's exchange partners;
  • a list of the courses that the student proposes to take and how they relate to the student's professional and academic objectives; and
  • a description of contacts and interactions with the local legal community that the student proposes to undertake through the proposed study and how the student will arrange such interactions.

The student should also provide evidence of sufficient foreign language fluency if courses are not taught in English.

If the proposed study is approved, the student will work with the Office of International and Non-JD Programs in working out the details of the study abroad, including course requirements.
