March 06, 2013

Fordham Law’s Dispute Resolution Society took first place at the ABA Mediation Competition in Newark, New Jersey, on March 3, 2013.

The Society fielded two teams composed of students Kartik Anjur ’14, Kharis Belgrave ’14, Sara Goldschmidt ’14, and Cristina Rincon ’14. Belgrave and Rincon took first place and will compete at the National Rounds in Chicago on April 3-4, 2013.

"Both ABA Mediation teams put in a tremendous effort over the preceding weeks, and that hard work paid off, as both teams were brilliant,” said Nick Schaefer ’13, who coached the two teams. “Our teams were the top two scores at the competition, and Cristina and Kharis won the vote of all 9 judges who saw them this weekend. It was an honor and a privilege to work with these competitors, who have developed a wealth of skills that they will use moving forward."

Team members were also supported by Professors Jacqueline Nolan-Haley, Peggy Leibowitz, and Deborah Shapiro. Society Chairperson Rob Sanzillo ’13, Managing Editor Caroline Billet ’13, and Competitions Editor Julia Belagorudsky ’13 provided the team with valuable assistance throughout their preparation. Professors Leibowitz and Shapiro stated, “Our team is the champion because it was the best prepared at the competition.”
