Center on European Union Law

 

The center is under the co-directorship of professors Martin Gelter and Mark R. Patterson. It was created by the late Professor Roger Goebel.

The primary objectives of the center are:

  • enabling lectures at Fordham and elsewhere on current European Union Law Topics by Court of Justice Judges, officials of the European Commission and Council, members of the European Parliament, and European scholars;
  • development of curriculum and teaching materials to be used at Fordham and other law schools in the United States and Europe;
  • facilitation of exchange of ideas and information among scholars, government officials, lawyers, business executives and students; for example, exposure of foreign officials and scholars to U.S. legal concepts and exposure of Americans to European Union Law.

The center assists in arrangements for at least five courses each year from the following list:

  • European Union Law
  • EC Business and Trade Law
  • EC Competition Law
  • EC Intellectual Property Law
  • EC Intellectual Property Licensing
  • EC-US Constitutional Law Comparisons
  • European Monetary Union and Banking Law

Center seminars

These seminars are offered to undergraduate and graduate law students and non-matriculating students such as corporate counsel, outside counsel, and government officials. The seminars on European Union Law have included lectures by:

  • Judges of the European Court of Justice and Court of First Instance (such as Lord Slynn of Hadley, Ole Due, David Edward, Francis Jacobs, Koen Lenaerts, John Murray, Jean-Pierre Puissochet, Bo Vesterdorf, and Melchior Wathelet)
  • Directors-General of the Council of Ministers' Legal Service (Jean-Claude Piris and Raffaello Fornasier)
  • Directors of the Commission's Legal Service (such as Giuliano Marenco and Richard Wainwright)
  • Directors in the Directorates-General for Competition and Financial Services (such as Jonathon Faull, Luc Gyselen, Paolo Clarotti, and Helmut Schroter)
  • Member of the European Parliament (Laurens Brinkhorst)

Symposia, public lectures and luncheon discussions with bar and business groups are also sponsored by the Center.
