Laura J. Popa

Laura Popa has spent over twelve years working at the New York City Council, where she is currently the Deputy Legislative Director and the Counsel to the Legistative Divisions. Her work encompasses legislative and policy issues affecting such diverse areas as environmental protection, transportation, labor, health, education, solid waste management, cultural affairs, and housing and buildings. Professor Popa drafts and negotiates bills, develops policy, leads the Council's efforts to enact sustainability legislation, and has represented the Council on a number of advisory groups, including the City's Sustainability Advisory Board, the Green Codes Task Force and the Building Resiliency Task Force, which was convened in response to Hurricane Sandy.
Professor Popa was a recipient of the 2012 Urban Green Service Award for her work on green bulding policies and legislation.
