April 03, 2013

U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Preet Bharara will give the graduation address and receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at Fordham Law’s 106th diploma ceremony, on Sunday, May 19, at Radio City Music Hall.

Fordham University President Joseph M. McShane, S.J., and Fordham Law Dean Michael M. Martin will confer degrees on 658 graduates—479 of whom will receive J.D. degrees and 179 of whom will receive LL.M. degrees.

Bharara, appointed U.S. Attorney by President Obama and unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate, has served in the position since 2009. He was featured in a Time magazine cover story, “This Man is Busting Wall Street,” and was also named one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World by the publication in 2012.

“Preet Bharara is truly a leader in the American legal system, and I am delighted that he will play a key role in this year’s Fordham Law Diploma Ceremony,” said Dean Martin.

As U.S. Attorney, Bharara oversees the investigation and litigation of all criminal and civil cases brought on behalf of the U.S. in the Southern District of New York and supervises more than 200 assistant U.S. Attorneys.

Bharara has also taught legal writing as a Fordham Law adjunct faculty member and has served as a guest speaker at various Law School events.
